My theme for 2023 is dance history in film. The first half of the year is focused on Golden Era technique and choreography. The second half shifts the lens to the United States, exploring the entry of "world dance" into jazz, Broadway, and commercial dance styles over the past 100 years. Re-infusing improvisation and other Africanist aesthetics are a major focus.
2024 will likely be themed on American Cabaret and/or Lebanese stylizations.
My classical performances and introductory classes are rooted in movements from various cultures of Southwest Asia (aka the Middle East) and North Africa. I offer folkloric performances for cultural festivals and community showcases.
My personal fusion style embraces the emotional and technical challenges of progressive rock music. Using tools from my training in MENAHT source culture dances and modern fusion trends, blended with my own intuitive flow, The Progressive Raqs Project is my exploration of this performance art. I am interested in building further collaboration, both locally and remotely.
