About this workshop

This workshop explores the creative fusion of belly dance movement with poi, bringing together rhythm, flow, and expression through movement and light. While poi originates from Māori culture, this workshop acknowledges and respects its cultural roots, using poi-inspired flow arts as a medium for contemporary and cross-cultural dance exploration. Participants will learn how to integrate poi patterns and techniques with belly dance isolations, layering, and transitions, creating a unique and visually captivating performance style. I will be using LED poi for demonstration purposes to enhance visibility and add an element of spectacle, especially suitable for stage or evening performances. Participants are welcome to bring traditional poi or silk veil poi according to their preference and availability.

Canela Farrara

I am a belly dance artist and teacher originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and have been based in Aotearoa for over eight years, performing and teaching within the local dance community. Dancing since 2011, my background spans both traditional and contemporary belly dance styles, and in recent years I have been exploring the use of props to enhance creative expression and stage performance. My teaching approach emphasizes creative exploration, safe technique, and cultural respect, encouraging dancers to find freedom and authenticity in their movement. I look forward to sharing this playful and illuminating fusion of poi and belly dance at MEDANZ Festival 2026
