About this workshop

This workshop dives into the heart of Lebanese Dabke. Known for its powerful energy and communal spirit, Dabke is a celebration of connection and strength. We’ll start with a brief kōrero about this dance before moving straight into the footwork. You will explore the different rhythms used in this style as well as essential line dynamics, focusing on the synchronised kicks, stomps, and sequences that define the Lebanese tradition. We will explore the social aspects of the dance and how to move confidently in a social line setting. This is perfect for anyone wanting to add a high-energy folk style to their repertoire or simply enjoy the thrill of dancing together.

Your Tutor

Canela Farrara

I am a belly dance artist and teacher originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and have been based in Aotearoa for over eight years, performing and teaching within the local dance community. Dancing since 2011, my background spans both traditional and contemporary belly dance styles, and in recent years I have been exploring the use of props to enhance creative expression and stage performance. My teaching approach emphasizes creative exploration, safe technique, and cultural respect, encouraging dancers to find freedom and authenticity in their movement. I look forward to sharing this playful and illuminating fusion of poi and belly dance at MEDANZ Festival 2026
