About the Event

Technique | Folkloric | Open

Learn basic movements of this dance form from Kalbeliya tribes in Rajasthan. The Kalbeliya dancers and musicians come from communities of snake charmers, hence why some movements of this dance are inspired in snake movements. Earlier this year, Mirian visited Kalbeliya communities in India and learned with the local artists including the legendary Gulabo Sapera who is the pioneer dancer in this style. Students will learn the basic footwork, hand gestures, spins and experience the joy of this exotic and earthy dance.

(After the workshop Mirian will make a donation to support the Kalbeliya communities who are currently suffering from unemployment as most of them are artists and cannot perform due to Covid-19 restrictions and lack of tourism. Any donation is accepted and is optional. As an example, USD$25 can feed a whole family for an entire month!)

Bring: Paper and Pen & Water bottle - Long Skirt and Dupata (or rectangle scarf or veil)
