HISTORY & CULTURE

Looking for Little Egypt

Donna Carlton

Who was Little Egypt? Perhaps you could also ask did she ever exist? It all started when Egyptian dancers featured in the World Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1839. 'Little Egypt' achieved some notoriety through reputed involvement in a scandal. This book explores the myths that surround Little Egypt and explode many of them. It traces Sol Blooms manipulation of the media and of course the emergence of the name 'Bellydance.' This book is highly researched and solidly built around fact rather than fiction. Awesome photographs and use of historic items. Highly recommended - Librarian's (Moonjelly) choice.

New Ways for Ancient lands

Doreen Ingrams

Strong winds of change are blowing across the Arab world today. Old time honored customs are gradually giving way to new ways of life and thought.

A Trade Like Any Other: female singers and dancers in Egypt

Karen Van Nieuwkerk

Looks at a history of dance in Egypt and the lives of current and retired dancers from Muhammed Ali Street. See also - Book reviews

A beautiful coffee table book. Stunning pictures from the age of Orientalism. This book ought to be read lightly and not as an authorative voice of Middle Eastern dance. Mostly a recycle of mythology.
